G.S. Clarke was the star pupil at the RMA Woolwich in 1866 and he became in later life a recognized authority on fortification, writing a textbook on the subject and becoming Secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence. Making drawings of fortifications in accordance with current fortification theory was a recognised part of the military academy course.
